GAINESVILLE - Thirty-six jobs were cut Monday night during a Hall County School Board meeting at Chestatee High School.

School Superintendent Will Schofield said the recession economy and a decreasing need for some teachers combined to cause the cuts.

"That involved fewer ELL teachers for next year and we also had a number of people we hired after school started and at this point we're not ready to offer those positions back, Schofield said.

Schofield said 18 English Language Learning (ELL) positions were cut along with 18 certified employees after the beginning of the current school year.

NIGHT OF HONORS

It was a night of honor for Hall County's Teachers of the Year and 71 system system retirees at Chestatee High School.

Margaret Ensley taught math at East Hall High School for 41 years.

"It's a great place and I never wanted to go anywhere else," She said.

Associate Superintendent for Human Resources, Dr. Richard Hill, said the total number of years of service for the retirees added up to 1700 years.
