GAINESVILLE - Hall County's public works director Monday got the go-ahead from county commissioners during their work session to look into extracting methane gas from two county landfills as an energy source for nearby industries.

According Ken Reardon a study shows there's enough gas to fuel the boilers at industries close to the now closed Allen Creek landfill and the still active Candler Road landfill, at a potential profit to the county.

"It could make a net profit for the county between $2 and 5-million during a 20 year life span," Reardon said.

Reardon said he's going to call on local industries to see if they are interested.

CLERMONT LEASE

Commissioners gave their O.K. to a lease of county recreation property to the City of Clermont, with official approval coming Thursday during their regular session. Mayor James Nix said the property adjoins the city's gym and recreation park.

"What we'd like to do is clean it up some and develop it into a park area," Nix said.

Nix added he would also like to see a soccer field, the first of its kind in North Hall County on the undeveloped site. The county leased the property to Clermont for ten dollars a year for the next 25 years, with the city to assume maintenance and liability insurance cost.

LAKE LANIER ISLANDS AGREEMENT

Commissioners said yes to an agreement with the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority, especially since it means putting a laid off employee back to work. The contract calls for providing one corrections officer to supervise up to twelve inmates for maintenance and construction at the lake resort, according to spokesman Dennis Udzinski.

"The work detail provided by Hall County will perform labor on public works projects consisting but not limited to 11 miles of hiking trails," Udzinski said.

The Authority would pay the officer's salary and transportation; the inmates would also work on bridges, board walks and steps on the Islands trail system.
