GAINESVILLE - The City and the people of Clermont have not given up on having a library. In fact they have started one of their very own according to Mayor James Nix.

Clermont fought and won its battle to get a new library built in town, only to see economic hard times delay it and close the old county library they had.
None of that has stopped them though. Mayor Nix said there is still going to be a library in Clermont.

"The success on it will hinge largely on volunteers," the Mayor said. "We've got some of the class rooms in the gymnasium we're using for a library."

Volunteers and lots of book donations; Nix hopes to see the library in the gym open as soon as it gets organized.

"People are donating books," Nix said. "You'd be surprised at what I'd call the quality of some of the things that are donated that people have had on their shelves at home and are willing to share with others."

Shelving in the "gym" library came from the old county library. Nix said the city salvaged it when it was about to be scrapped and the local historical society has joined in to help get the library going.

"They are using one of the class rooms as an office and for using that office they're going to run and organize the library," according to Nix.

There are no regular hours for Clermont's library in the gym yet, there are still a lot of books that need to go on shelves and maybe in the near future, a computer or two will be in service. There are even plans for cultural instruction.

"I think the Historical Society has a commitment on an artist to hold classes late next month," the Mayor said.
