GAINESVILLE - Hall County now has an assistant administrator, named Thursday evening during the County Commission's regular session.

Administrator Randy Knighton announced he hired Public Safety Director Marty Nix to the post; Nix went to work for the county in 1984.

"Marty is the epitome of an excellent public servant. His law enforcement background and diverse experience will serve the county well moving forward," Knighton said. "He has tremendous respect from the staff and citizens. I look forward to serving with him in the coming years."

Nix continues as head of Public Safety, which includes E-911, County Marshals, Animal Control and the Animal Shelter. By promoting Nix the county saved the cost of adding another salary to the payroll during this difficult economic period.

"Randy and I both have been with the County,I've been with the county for 27 years now," Nix said. "I'm pretty familiar with how the county works with all its underlying departments so I think that's part of the reason they wanted to stay internal."

Nix said he's prepared to help support Knighton as he puts an administrative plan together and implements policy set by the commission board.

Nix is P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certified, is a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College, and has an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and a master's degree in public administration He served three years as the assistant warden of the Correctional Institute, three years with the District Attorney's Office, numerous years with the Sheriff's Office and four years managing E-911/Central Communications. He became Public Safety Director in April 2009.
