GAINESVILLE - Hall County's Parks and Leisure Services Director asks for, and is granted, an early release from his contract as the county works through plans to keep the park system operating.

Greg Walker was released from his contract with Hall County Government effective August 1, according to a statement released by county officials. Assistant County Administrator Marty Nix will assume operational responsibility for Parks and Leisure immediately.

The Hall County Board of Commissioners voted June 30 on a budget that called for the potential privatization of Parks and Leisure. Funding for the parks department was provided through September 1.

The county administration is working on a plan for operations of the park system beyond Sept. 1. The staff is in discussions with the local YMCA and Boys & Girls Club about the possibility of running the parks.

"During this time of transition, it is necessary for this department to have leadership in place that can provide oversight of current operations and, more importantly, provide guidance to the Board on options for the future of Parks and Leisure," County Administrator Randy Knighton said.
