GAINESVILLE - Georgia's 1st lady came back to her native Gainesville Saturday to help raise funds for female cancer survivors.

Sandra Deal said it was good to be back home and visit with old friends, but even more important to raise money to support "For Her Glory" as featured speaker at the Gainesville Phoenix Women's Club's annual charity banquet.
For her Glory provides wigs and other essentials to women who have undergone chemotherapy and have no insurance.

"It's important to women have self image and improve their image when they've gone through such tragic situations," Mrs. Deal said. "For Her Glory raises funds to buy wigs for people who don't have the money to buy them after they've had chemo."

The First Lady this week was also named by Governor Deal to chair the advisory committee of the Governor's Office for Children and Families. Habersham County native Katie Jo Ballard was named executive director, replacing Jen Bennecke.

"I think it's very important to help our children develop strong and to see that they get the services we can provide whether it's done through state finances or through organizations," she said. "It's important take care of our children."

Cancer survivor and Women's Club third vice president Brenda Martin said the club hoped to raise $3,000 at their third annual event.

"There are a lot of women who are cancer survivors including myself," she said. "When you go through chemo and you lose your hair or you lose your breasts you sometimes don't feel like a woman. That wig can make you feel like a lady again, and that's why we do this, to help these ladies get their dignity back."

For Her Glory was founded by Judy Piotrowski, her husband Scott and close friends Jackie and Counte Cooley in August 2004. Piotrowski died of breast cancer in 2004. Martin said prior to her death she realized that establishing the foundation was her purpose in life and the reason she had survived the disease until that point.
