Capt. Jason Shivers with the Forsyth County Fire Department said it happened around 9:00 a.m. For an unknown reason, the man swerved from the road and hit a parked vehicle and then traveled into the fuel station island at the Shell Food Mart.
"[He] struck a center diesel fuel pump, destroying it completely, and actually dislodging it and throwing that pump out across the parking lot, and then continuing on to strike one of the upright awning poles of the service station [fuel] island," said Shivers.
Shivers said no customers were injured. He did not have an update on the condition of the motorist, but did say the man was talking with emergency workers when he was transported to the hospital.
The Shell Food Mart remains closed while debris and leaking fuel are cleaned up. Traffic is moving in the area, according to Shivers.
