LAVONIA - The search is on for the persons believed responsible for Thursday's armed robbery of the North Georgia Credit Union on Highway 17 in Lavonia.

GBI Agent Jim Fullington of Athens said three suspects hit the credit union just after 2:30 p.m.

"[They] robbed the credit union at gunpoint. The subjects fled in what was described by witnesses as a white pick-up truck," said Fullington.

He said a state trooper spotted the truck and followed it into the Springview Heights neighborhood. All three suspects ran; two escaped and 43-year-old Walter Butler, Jr. of Bowersville was caught.

Butler is currently being held at the Franklin County Detention Center and has been charged with armed robbery.

Fullington did not disclose how much money was taken in the robbery, although he said some items related to the robbery were discovered in the pick-up truck.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is working in conjunction with the Lavonia Police Department and the Franklin County Sheriff's Department on the case.
