BRASELTON - Town officials are encouraging Braselton citizens to call the owner of Mayfield Dairies and ask that the company not shut down the visitors center and ice cream shop.

In a press release issued Friday, Town Manager Jennifer Dees said, "Their [visitors center and ice cream shop]presence in Braselton has become part of our identity and we have always embraced the visitors, young and old, who made Mayfield and Braselton a stop on their travels."

Dees said that the town will do its best to keep the center open if at all possible. She emphasized that the plant itself will remain open; it is only the visitors center area that is slated to be closed.

Dees estimated that in the first 10 years after the Mayfield Visitors Center opened in 1997, it received 1.3 million visitors and probably close to 400,000 in the years since that point.

She indicated that company owner Scottie Mayfield will be in Braselton Monday to visit the plant. For the weekend, she said they want Mayfield to hear from the town of Braselton.

"We are asking anyone who may be able to influence this decision to call Scottie Mayfield at 1-800-362-9546 and ask him to get Dean Foods to keep our Center open," said Dees.
