Tanya Tyler, her husband and children were awakened by police activity outside their window.
"It was about three in the morning. I heard a gunshot, and I sat up in the bed. 'I'm like, was that a gunshot? He (her husband)was like, it could have been a test shot or whatever.' We didn't know what it was," Tyler said.
It happened early Friday morning in the 3500 block of Thompson Mill Road, just across the road from Tyler's home.
"If he would have come out of his back door, he would have had a line right for our house."
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the man took his own life at some point during the standoff. He was apparently wanted in connection with an aggravated assault in Braselton.
"We saw the lights and everything, but what we heard then was telling the guy to come out, and so we're thinking is it the house on the corner, is it someone in our subdivision? There's no way it could be someone in our subdivision, but we didn't know," Tyler said.
Tyler and her husband brought the children into their bedroom and started praying.
Tyler said Gwinnett County Police had her subdivision blocked until about 6:15 a.m.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that the standoff across the road began around 1:00 a.m.
