Even though turnout across the state has been lower than that of 2008, according to the Secretary of State, that's not been the reported trend in north Georgia counties.
For example, in Gwinnett County, elections officials reported triple the number of early voters on opening day of advance voting Monday, October 15. Hall County Elections Director Charlotte Sosebee reported more than 1,000 voters on the same date.
In White County, Elections Director Lisa Manning reported more than 200 voters per day cast ballots last week. While she noted that the number may not be impressive to those in larger counties, she said in a county with only 14,000 active voters, that's enough to keep her office hopping.
"I can tell you this election is a lot busier than 2008," she said. "I don't recall voting over 200 people a day in 2008."
And, Manning said she has high hopes for this coming week's turnout, as well, especially since Saturday, October 27 is the only mandated weekend voting day for the general election.
"It's a good opportunity, especially for people that work during the week and they cannot get to the polls on Tuesday the 6th [November 6] or they can't come during the week for early voting," she said.
One unique issue that has sparked interest in White County is the vote to exempt the so-called Freeport Tax on business inventory. Manning said the big draw remains the presidential election, however.
