The governor was the keynote speaker Tuesday at the school's 98th commencement. Deal addressed hundreds of fall graduates seated across 30 yards of turf at the Georgia Dome.
The governor did not use his time at the podium to announce any new initiatives or make any policy declarations.
Perhaps the most significant part of the ceremony is that it happened at all.
Georgia State officials earlier this year said they would move to one commencement each year. They cited cost and the availability of the Georgia Dome.
President Mark Becker reversed the decision in June after an outcry from students.
