CUMMING - A woman who once served as the treasurer of the PTO at Cumming Elementary School will spend 15 months on probation for stealing from the group.

A report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution said Jamie Garfield entered guilty pleas to three counts of theft by taking. She immediately paid back $10,000 of the $32,000 she admitted stealing. The court says she must pay back the balance over the course of her probation.

The published report said the school board told the court they did not want Garfield to serve time in prison for the crime because she has young children in school.

Garfield also is forbidden from handling money for any groups in the future; she must also do community service as part of her sentence.

Board members for the PTO reportedly discovered the thefts when they realized a PTO bank account was overdrawn in August 2010.

Garfield was the treasurer of the school PTO in 2009 and 2010.
