White Co. businessman, civic leader Nix dies at 91

CLEVELEAND - A former longtime White County businessman John L. (J. L.) Nix has died. Nix, who was 91, passed away Wednesday at his residence following an extended illness. Nix started Nix Hardware and Furniture in 1945. In 1946, he became a founding director of The Peoples Bank in Cleveland, the forerunner of the current Regions Bank, where he served as Director, President and Chairman of the Board. He also started Nix Ford Dealership in 1954.

Nix served on the Board of Trustees of Truett-McConnell College for over 20 years and also served as Chairman. He and his wife Sarah worked with TMC to plan and establish the John L. and Sarah Nix Student Center. They also worked with North Georgia College& State University to establish the John L. Nix Mountain Cultural Center and Fine Arts Series.

In addition, Nix served for over 21 years on the City Council of Cleveland.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Cleveland First Baptist Church.
