FLOWERY BRANCH - A quarry in the city of Flowery Branch will encompass an additional 6.45 acres after a vote by the city council Monday night.

Flowery Branch Mayor Mike Miller said Lafarge Building Materials, Inc. was able to purchase the property from some homeowners along Friendship Road.

"There is no change in their operations of the quarry," said Miller. "This just helps them kind of shore up their boundaries."

Along with the approval of the annexation came a change in zoning. Miller said the change simply aligns industrial zoning codes for all portions of the 373+ acre Lafarge property.

In addition, Lafarge asked for, and was granted, permission to present a noise study to the city every three years, as opposed to annually. Miller said that the city did maintain the right to request a noise study should there be complaints from area residents.

CITY TO HIRE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

Flowery Branch City Council decided Monday night that they would eliminate the position of Assistant City Clerk, a post that has been vacant for several months, and replace it with the new position of Director of Finance.

"That position would take on the budgetary issues of the city, be an overseer of all finances for the city," said Mike Miller.

Miller said the responsibility of filling the job lies with city Manager Bill Andrew. According to Miller, Andrew told Council he would bring any information on prospects for the job to council members before he did any hiring.
