GAINESVILLE - Saturday crappie fishing was out of the ordinary on Lake Lanier. The anglers were fishing for a wounded Marine.

Nineteen year old Marine Private First Class Sean Adams is hospitalized with wounds from a hidden explosive he stepped on in Afghanistan two months ago.
Adams lost both legs along with other injuries and David Hocker with the Marine League said the crappie tournament, hosted by the Marine League and several active duty Marines, was a special event to help his family out.

"Our purpose is to raise money to cover the multitude of expenses that many times are not covered," Hocker said.

Two dozen boats went out in a heavy early morning rain and weighed their fish at Lakewood Baptist Church between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.; Stacy Rolin from Buford with Lanier Crappie Anglers said he had a good day.

"We did pretty good," Rolin said. "We got the limit and got 8.23 pounds."

Pat Welch from Dawsonville had a catch that weighed in at 8.67 pounds.

Adams remains at Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland. He was wounded when he stepped on an IED while he was on patrol.

Hocker said area businesses donated $3 to $4,000 in prizes for this first time fishing event to benefit the wounded Marine.

"With Tracy Tompkins, president of the local crappie club here, this was sort of our brain child where we wanted to do something, so we thought this was a good idea," Hocker said.

Money was raised with the $50 entry fee per boat and everything not used as prizes was raffled off, along with cash donations from area businesses.
