FLOWERY BRANCH - Members of the Hall County Joint Municipal Association got a lesson about the Gwinnett Settlement on service delivery at their meeting Monday night in Flowery Branch at Spout Springs Library.

Managing Director of the Gwinnett Municipal Association Randy Meacham said the end result of that settlement was that city taxpayers were no longer taxed for county services they don't receive. Meacham had some advice for city officials in Hall County.

"I think it's important that the eight cities in Hall County stay together," Meacham said. "You've got various sizes just like we do in Gwinnett. We've got Lawrenceville with 30,000 residents and we've got Auburn with 200 residents, but those two cities were working together for a common solution to the service delivery issue."

Hall City officials said service delivery could come up later this year when the county negotiates the local option sales tax with the cities.

JAIL TALKS STILL ON

Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan said at the meeting that negotiations continue for the city's purchase of the old county jail. Hall County set a Friday April 20th noon deadline for an agreement between Gainesville and Corrections Corporation of America, the jail's current occupant.

"We got an extension, nothing is definite on terms of the lease, assuming the lease, the amount of money and so forth" Dunagan said.

The Hall County Commission sent a letter from Commission Chairman Tom Oliver to Mayor Dunagan last week that unless the city of Gainesville could reach an agreement with CCA the county would proceed with its own CCA lease purchase agreement.
