GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville City Police Department is commemorating National Police Week in a couple of different ways this week.

Through the weekend, the Public Safety Building on Queen City Parkway will be illuminated in blue.

"The executive staff of the police department came together and we decided we wanted to light the outside of the Gainesville Justice Center up blue this week in support and remembrance of Police Week," said Gainesville Police Chief Brian Kelly at Tuesday night's Gainesville City Council meeting.

In addition, Gainesville Police Officer Griggs Wall is in the nation's capitol to take part in the Police Unity Tour, a bicycle ride that raises money for the National Law Enforcement Officer s Memorial and Museum.

Kelly said this is the third year a Gainesville police officer has taken part in the Unity Tour.
