JEFFERSON - Republican Hunter Bicknell has decided he will not run for Georgia's newly-drawn 9th congressional district after all.

In a statement released Thursday morning, Bicknell said he will qualify instead for re-election to the Jackson County Board of Commissioners as Chairman.

"Today, instead of qualifying for U.S. Congress, I will seek re-election as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. It is disappointing that in politics today, well-funded lobbyists and PACs control and manipulate elections. I ran a strong grassroots campaign focused on controlling the runaway spending and halting our national debt. My team and I are very proud of the race we've run and are encouraged by the amount of positive feedback we've received," said Bicknell.

Bicknell noted in the statement that funding for his campaign would fall short of what he would need to adequately campaign for Congress.

Bicknell was elected Chairman of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners in 2008.
