GAINESVILLE - Georgia's Lt. Governor said in Gainesville Tuesday he's supporting Mitt Romney for president, but Romney needs to be closer to the voters.

Casey Cagle told Gainesville Kiwanis members the real struggle in the race to defeat incumbent Democrat Barack Obama right now is connecting with the voters.

"We need a less scripted person and we need a more genuine, real individual," Cagle said.

Cagle said that's what he would tell Romney if he asks. Cagle was responding to a question about what Romney needs to do to defeat Obama. When it comes political polarization and deadlock in Congress or state legislative ethics, Cagle, fielding another audience question, said there is no substitute for character.

"What we need today more than ever is we need statesmen," Cagle said. "We need people who are willing to stand up and just do the right thing."

During his remarks Cagle said the key to Georgia's growth is continued support of technical education and new industry.

"We need to continue existing companies that are here in Georgia, recruit new ones and grow new ones," he added.

Cagle said creating college and career academies and cutting the manufacturing sales tax were the right legislative moves for continued progress in the state.
