GAINESVILLE - The thousands of people who attended Wednesday's Annual Fourth of July Picnic at Memorial Park Funeral Home might have noticed a large area of cleared land next to the picnic site.

Memorial Park owner Jack Frost said at the 19th annual event he has some big plans for that site - a 10,000 square foot community center.

Frost said a number of funeral homes across the country have constructed community centers as part of their public service efforts.

"It's just strictly for service, to have community events, board meetings for various organizations" said Frost. "It's just as it says...a community center."

Land is already being cleared for the project, and Frost anticipates the facility should be ready in time for next year's picnic, which would be the 20th annual event.

Frost began the annual picnic on the Fourth of July in 1993 as a way to pay tribute to local public servants - law enforcement, firefighters, elected officials.

The event has blossomed over the years, attracting up to 6,000 participants in some years. Election years usually attract large crowds, and this year was no exception.

"There's no doubt about it," said Frost. "I think every politican that's running for office in Hall County is here. And we welcome them. We're glad they're here!"

As in the past, volunteers were dishing up BBQ chicken and pork, hot dogs, baked beans, chips and watermelon free of charge to the public.

Frost said it's a tradition that will continue.

"Your question was, 'Do you ever plan on stopping this?' Never! It will never be stopped."
