GAINESVILLE - Hall County Commissioners are planning a house cleaning at the new Government Center, formerly the Liberty Mutual Building, and Monday said they want local vendors to get first choice at surplus items.

Liberty Mutual left behind a pile of office furniture, steelcase cubicles, an oven and other items and Finance Director Vickie Neikirk said it's in the way. Commissioners said they want to try to sell it to local businesses and not through the 'Gov Deals' on line auction site.

"There's been some interest expressed by local vendors," Neikirk said. "The Commission decided today they preferred that the sale be local if possible."

There's no date set for the sale yet.

HELPING THE 'MAZE'

Commissioners looked into streamlining the special events license for the annual 'Corn Maze' in the Hall County part of Buford. When the Corn Maze business application came up, Commissioner Craig Lutz asked if there was not a way to make it easier for the family oriented agriculture event.

"Let's look at whatever it is we have to do to keep them from going through the whole process again next year, to expedite it," Lutz said.

Chairman Tom Oliver suggested the Corn Maze could get a Commission renewal next year on the consent agenda similar to that granted to Road Atlanta.

FROM RESIDENTIAL BACK TO AGRICULTURAL

A sign of the economic times came before the Commissioners in the form of a rezoning request. Planning Director Mark Lane said a would be 59 acre Planned Residential Development in Northeast Hall County on Lawson Robinson Road would go back to agricultural zoning if rezoning is approved.

"The applicant is looking to purchase the property and he does not want to complete the subdivision, he just wants to build one or two houses," Lane said.

Lane added that the bank foreclosed on the property in 2008 and applicant Hal Bache wants to buy it from the bank for his personal use.
The Planning Commission approved Bache's application.

LOST OPTIMISIM

Chairman Oliver said Monday afternoon he is optimistic that the Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) negotiations between the county and Hall's cities would be settled without going into arbitration.City and County officials have 60 days to do that with the cities hoping to get a bigger share of LOST revenue than they got ten years ago.

"Once you get money involved everybody starts jockeying for position, so I'm sure there will be a fair amount of jockeying for position," Oliver predicted.

LOST negotiations are held every ten years; the county now gets 75 percent of the revenue, the cities, 25 percent. LOST meetings began with an initial session held in Flowery Branch at the Spout Springs Library Monday morning.
