ATHENS - Authorities with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said a Monroe man was struck and killed by a pickup truck early Friday; the man reportedly was running from a nearby restaurant to avoid paying his bill.

A report in the Athens Banner Herald said the fatal accident happened about 5:00 a.m. on Atlanta Highway near the intersection of Tall Tree Road when the 21-year-old man ran from a nearby Waffle House restaurant where he and three friends had been eating. Police said the other three had left the restaurant prior to the victim's departure.

A Nicholson man, who was not identified, hit the man when he ran in front of his pickup truck. No charges were filed against him.

Authorities have not released the name of the victim, pending notification of relatives.
