GAINESVILLE - A family waiting on a new home will have to wait even longer now that thieves have damaged the Gainesville house that was being built by Habitat for Humanity volunteers.

Ann Nixon, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity-Hall County, said volunteers with Habitat High and Women Build were working on the modest ranch-style house off Holly Springs Road. They had taken a break from construction over the holiday, but they arrived at the work site this week to find the back door to the house broken down.

"All of the wiring, which was exposed because we were just at that stage of having wired [the house], was stripped out for copper," said Nixon.

She said the thieves had also broken the lock off a storage pod and stolen a number of tools that the Habitat High students were using in the construction project.

In addition to the monetary loss, Nixon said the emotional loss was an issue, too.

"People give their hearts, their hands, their time and their money to help put a deserving family into a home," she said. "This sets us back emotionally. It sets us back in terms of our timetable to help that family get established in a new home."

Nixon said a single parent and two children were scheduled to occupy the home upon its completion.

She also said Habitat will accept donations to help replace lost materials being used to build the home.
