Sen. Don Balfour, a Snellville Republican, is set to appear in Fulton County Superior Court Dec. 16 after his lawyer filed a request for a speedy trial. Lawyer Ken Hodges said his client is innocent and wants to get the trial behind him.
A grand jury indicted Balfour in September on felony charges of making a false certificate, theft by taking and a count of false statement and writing. He is accused of illegally claiming legislative expense pay and double-billing the state and his private employer for some expenses.
Gov. Nathan Deal signed an order suspending Balfour earlier this month. The Senate Republican leadership then stripped him of his leadership positions.
