The Helen Arts & Heritage Center is sponsoring four special programs for Helen's centennial year, and the first one is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the Center.
Already, the Center hosts "History of Helen" events every other month, and these four programs will feature segments of the city's history than span about 25 years each, beginning with the city's founding in 1913. The programs will culminate with a "Happy Birthday, Helen!" party scheduled on Tuesday, August 13.
In addition to the "History of Helen" programs, HAHC plans a "Murals of Helen" walking tour and map, scheduled for late spring or early summer. The original presentation, which is the basis for the map and tour, was created with assistance by a grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts.
HAHC treasurer Paula Ash said she met recently with a planning committee to coordinate the Center's plans for the celebration. Local historians David Greear and Bill Huff joined White County GIS mapping technician Chris Ernst and Georgia Mountain Regional Commission planner Sarah McQuade to help plan festivities.
