"(It was) mainly due to the mechanism of injury. He was lodged 50 feet down into a well for an hour and a half. With unknown injuries internally, we felt it best to have him evaluated," Hall County Fire Marshall Scott Cagle said.
Firefighters got the call around 1:15 p.m. to a residence in the 3700 block of Leach Road in the northwest portion of the county. The man, believed to be in his 20's, had been working on waterlines above the well, according to Cagle.
He was alert and talking to rescuers throughout the ordeal.
Because the top of the well was in an outbuilding, rescuers were unable to use a tripod to hoist the man out. They turned to a nearby tree to anchor their rigging.
Initially they sent down a harness for the man to put on, but Cagle said it kept slipping. They tested the air and determined it was safe for a firefighter.
"The rescuer himself went down to the well and secured the victim and we brought them both back up topside," Cagle said.
Cagle said the victim was either a friend or family member of the residents of the house. Cagle could not release the name of the man because of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
