FLOWERY BRANCH - Flowery Branch, at least a portion of it, is now in the Lake Lanier Islands Parkway Community Improvement District, with unanimous approval Thursday night from City Council.

Only a portion of the C.I.D. is inside the city limits and that portion is primarily the Vulcan Materials rock quarry.

Vulcan supports the C.I.D. because it becomes eligible for several district services according to City Manager Bill Andrew including street and road construction and maintenance, water distribution, parks and recreation, public transportation and storm water and sewerage collection and disposal systems.
As an industrial property Vulcan would be taxed an additional five mills at 40 percent of the property's value.

"They're the only property that's affected and they're in support of it so we want to support that business," Andrew said. "The benefits are constrained to that geographic area where Vulcan is located."

TRAINS STILL SLOW MOVING

Northfolk Southern Railroad has sent divers underwater in Flowery Branch to determine the level of damage to culverts causing the tracks to sag and the trains to slow down. City Manager Andrew said four of six culverts have collapsed and the railroad wants to fix them as soon as possible.

"Northfolk Southern does have divers they have brought in from Kentucky," Andrew said. "Some of the culvert structures are fully underwater so they've been using the divers to assess what's there."

Andrew added that motorists continue to complain about long waits at the city's rail crossings caused by trains going between three to 10 miles an hour.
