MARIETTA - A father and son from Forsyth County have been charged with stealing more than $1.6 million from an elderly Cobb County woman.

Cobb County authorities said Jeffrey T. Carr, 39, of Bethel Ridge Court, Gainesville, remains jailed, while his father, Joseph T. Carr, 65, of Kate Court, Gainesville, is out of jail on bond.

The victim in the case is 91-year-old Frances Perkins, according to police warrants.

Cobb County authorities said Jeffrey Carr had been stealing from Perkins bank accounts, assuming the duties of an investment adviser, while using her money for personal gain. He has been charged with four counts of theft by taking and exploitation of the elderly.

Joseph Carr is charged with theft by receiving stolen property and exploitation of the elderly.

In a press statement from the Cobb County Sheriff's Office, authorities said between April 2012 and January 2013, Jeffrey Carr appropriated approximately $1.6 million dollars from Perkins' bank accounts. They said the younger Carr influenced the victim to sign a power of attorney that gave him access to her remaining estate.

When the two men were arrested last week, search warrants were obtained for their homes in Forsyth County. Authorities said they seized four Cadillacs and two Rolex watches, all believed to have been purchased with money from Perkins' bank accounts.

Arrest warrants also indicate that Jeffrey Carr persuaded Perkins to move into an assisted living facility in the Gainesville area after she was hospitalized. Investigators said after her rehabilitation, he had her move into a bedroom at his father's home, thus allowing him easier access to her money.

The warrant indicated Jeffrey Carr was able to exercise undue influence over Perkins, since her children were involved in a long-running argument. They said Carr took advantage of the sibling rivalry to coerce Perkins to give him control of her finances.
