A Gwinnett County girl had to have a series of four rabies shots after she was attacked by a dog this past Friday on Cochran Road off Thompson Bridge Road in Hall County.

Amber Bergin, 10, was interviewed by Channel 2 News in Atlanta, and told reporters that she and her mother had gone to a home on Cochran Road to drop off some second-hand items. She said the dog, described as a pit bull, was tied at a neighbors house. The child said she asked permission to pet the animal and that's when it attacked.

The girl received 26 stitches to her face.

The dog's owner allegedly took the animal away following the bite.

"At the time our officers got there, there was no one there. The animal was not there either," Hall County Animal Control and Enforcement Director Mike Ledford said.

Because the animal was not in custody, the child had to have injections Monday.

Ledford said following an investigation, the dog is now in his office's custody.

"The dog is quarantine. Just like every dog we have, it'll remain in quarantine for ten days. Assuming it's still alive and healthy at the end of that ten-day period, it does not have rabies," Ledford said.

"We do have charges already, citations issued for failure to have a rabies vaccination on the animal. Of course, the investigation is still open. There could be other charges from there," Ledford said.

Authorities have not released the name of the dog's owner.
