Authorities said Ralph Head's legs became entangled in rock and other debris in the river after his canoe capsized Monday evening and he couldn't stay above the water.
Investigators say he died about an hour after he was pulled from the river.
Authorities say Head was canoeing with his son and a friend and took several precautions, including wearing a helmet. But wildlife officials say the Chattooga River runs fast and has lots of rocks and other places where it is easy to get entangled.
