GAINESVILLE - The Georgia Mountain Players ended a 21-year August tradition Sunday afternoon, performing "Smoke on the Mountain" one final time at the old Georgia Mountains Center Theatre in downtown Gainesville.

Leaders of the Georgia Mountain Players announced earlier this year that this season would be their farewell season, noting that a number of the long-time players had health issues and others had time commitments that were taking them away from the stage.

Gainesville City Councilwoman Myrtle Figueras attended the final performance of 'Smoke,' declaring Sunday, August 25, 2013 as Georgia Mountain Players Day in Gainesville.

The Georgia Mountain Players have one final show scheduled for October. "Leading Ladies" will also be staged at the theatre in the newly-named Brenau University Center.
