The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Dawson County Sheriff's Department recovered the body around 12:53 p.m., according to Kristi Hudson, Public Information Coordinator for Dawson County Government.
DNR spokesman Rick Lavender identified the victim as 45-year-old Ramiro Ponce-Ruiz.
Lavender earlier said K9 units with Dawson County Fire Services were also used to look for the body of the man who disappeared under the surface of the creek around 4 p.m. Sunday.
"[He] was swimming with friends and family on Sunday at Amicalola Creek, which this part is on the Dawson Wildlife Management Area," said Lavender. "There's a popular swimming hole known as Devil's Elbow."
Authorities earlier believed Ponce-Ruiz had used a ropeswing, but have since learned otherwise.
"According to witness accounts, he swam out from the bank and dove under. When he surfaced, he was struggling and went back under and was not seen again."
Authorities said the body was found in water about 20 feet deep.
"There's a strong current flowing through there, so it was a search that involved some challenges," Lavender said.
Authorities resumed their search Monday morning after searching until about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Several agencies were involved in the search and recovery effort, including DNR Law Enforcement Division rangers, the Dawson County Sheriff's Office and Fire Department, Dawson County's dive team and divers from Cherokee County.
Hall County Sheriff's Office dive team members assessed the site and planned to help in the diving operation Monday afternoon if needed, according to Lavender.
