In a press statement, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said 29-year-old Matthew James Hardy of Toccoa and 22-year-old Jerry Lee Eaton, Jr. of Marietta, South Carolina were arrested Monday. Each have been charged with eight counts of entering autos in connection with thefts that occurred late last week in the Jefferson area.
Authorities said they were able to recover some of the stolen property in Georgia and some in South Carolina. Hardy and Eaton are currently jailed in Oconee County, South Carolina.
Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said there has been a recent increase in the county in thefts of items from vehicles. She said most of those vehicles are parked in subdivisions or residential communities. She said the thefts often occur during the night and are usually not detected until residents leave for work or school the next morning.
Mangum issued a reminder to residents to secure items of value such as guns, jewelry, phones, electronics, cash, computers and other valuables.
