Madison Co. schools will alter monument with Biblical scripture

DANIELSVILLE - The Madison County School Board apparently has voted to alter a monument on the high school campus that displays Biblical scripture along with the school logo.<br /> <br /> The American Humanist Association (AHA), an atheist group from Washington, D.C., had written to the school board, asking that the monument be removed from campus, since it promotes Christianity, thus violating the constitutional separation of church and state.<br /> <br /> "No public school should be promoting the majority religion," said David Niose, legal director of the Appignani Humanist Legal Center in an email statement. "We are pleased that the school board has decided to respect the constitutional separation of church and state and the rights [sic] religious and nonreligious minorities." <br /> <br /> The letter said the board voted unanimously Tuesday night to either remove or cover the scriptures displayed on the monument outside the football stadium at Madison County High School.<br /> <br /> The attorney for the school board has not yet returned a phone call to discuss the matter.<br /> <br /> The AHA is the same organization that demanded from the Hall County School Board a change in policy for prayer in the school system after they received a complaint that football coaches at Chestatee High School had been leading prayer with the team.
