STATESBORO - Saying he poses a danger to the community, a judge in south Georgia has denied bond for the man accused of beating to death a Georgia Southern University student from north Georgia.

Ogeechee Judicial Circuit Court Judge William Woodrum, Jr. earlier this month delayed a bond hearing for Grant James Spencer, 20, but this past Thursday, Woodrum denied bond for the defendant.

A report in the Statesboro Herald said Woodrum pointed out that Spencer had several other arrests leading up the deadly incident outside a Statesboro bar on August 28. That's the night 18-year-old Michael Gatto of Forsyth County was killed. Because of those other arrests, most alcohol-related, Woodrum said Spencer was a threat to others.

The judge also wrote in his order that he believed Spencer was a flight risk.

Gatto, a graduate of South Forsyth High School, was a freshman at Georgia Southern University when he was killed.
