ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia Department of Transportation says it will suspend installation of a type of guardrail that has been banned or removed from roads in nearly 30 other states.
WSB-TV reports the Georgia Department of Transportation has issued a moratorium on installing ET-Plus guardrail models throughout the state after reviewing information provided by the Federal Highway Administration.
The ends of the guard rails are supposed to slow vehicles down by flattening the rail out after impact and bending the rail away from a car that strikes it. Instead, some of the guardrails have been reported to slice through cars after impact.
A federal jury last week found the maker of the guard rails, Trinity Industries, guilty of defrauding the government by shrinking the design to cut costs.
