AUGUSTA - Former Georgia Governor Carl Sanders has died at the age of 89, according to a press statement.

Sanders, who was in office from 1963 through 1967, died at his home after complications following a fall this past Friday morning.

An Augusta native, Sanders was a World War II veteran and a graduate of the University of Georgia Law School. Sanders was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1954 and then was elected two years later to the State Senate. Sanders defeated former Georgia Governor Marvin Griffin in 1962. He was elected at the age of 37, the youngest governor in the country at the time.

Sanders served just one term, losing the office to Jimmy Carter.

After he left the governor's office in 1967, Sanders founded the law firm now known as Troutman Sanders LLP, which has now grown into an international firm with more than 600 attorneys. The former governor managed the firm for 25 years.

A private graveside service will be held in Augusta for Sanders on Wednesday. A memorial service is to be held Saturday in Atlanta at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church; a time has not yet been set for that service.
Former Gov. Carl Sanders is survived by his wife Betty Foy Sanders, their two children and their grandchildren.
