KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) Kennesaw's mayor is urging the city council, which rejected plans for a mosque at a strip mall, to reconsider the issue.

Mayor Mark Mathews on Sunday told The Marietta Daily Journal that he would like to see the issue brought up at the council's meeting Wednesday night.

The city council last week voted 4-1 against the request. About 10 protesters had gathered outside City Hall before the vote, waving American flags and signs saying "no mosque."

The council's decision led to criticism of council members by phone, email and in person. Councilwoman Cris Eaton-Welsh, who voted in favor of the mosque, said tension among residents has led Kennesaw police to provide increased security for all of the council members.
The mosque's lawyer has said his client is considering a lawsuit.
