CCGA names award in memory of Gainesville attorney Wyc Orr

ATLANTA - The Board of Directors for Common Cause Georgia recently honored late Gainesville attorney Wyc Orr with a special award at its annual ceremony.<br /> <br /> The "Wyc Orr Legal Advocacy Democracy Award" will be given each year to a member of the Georgia Bar or a Georgia citizen who uses the legal system in a way that will further "ethical, honest, open and fair government," according to the resolution presented at the ceremony.<br /> <br /> Orr's family attended the annual meeting on November 16 where the announcement about the award was made.<br /> <br /> Orr died in May at the age of 67 following a battle with cancer.<br /> <br /> <b>The following is the content of the resolution as presented to the Orr Family:</b><br /> <br /> <i>BOARD OF DIRECTORS RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION AND PROFOUND APPRECIATION OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE<br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Eston Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr., passed from this life on May 28, 2014; <br /> <br /> and, WHEREAS, Eston Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr. had a long and distinguished legal career serving in the United States Judge Advocate General's Corps, and the private practice of law in the State of Georgia for over 40 years;<br /> <br /> and, WHEREAS, Eston Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr. championed the defense of indigent citizens as a guiding leader in the creation of the Georgia Public Defenders Standards Council resulting in his being awarded a 2014 lifetime achievement award from the Southern Center for Human Rights; <br /> <br /> and, WHEREAS, Eston Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr. was a leading legal servant having served on the State Bar of Georgia Board of Governors, founding and presiding over the Chattahoochee American Inn of Court, subsequently renamed the E. Wycliffe Orr, Sr. Inn of Court; <br /> <br /> and, WHEREAS, Eston Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr. served the State of Georgia as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1989 to 1993; <br /> <br /> and, WHEREAS, Eston Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr. served his church as a faithful member,<br /> Chairman of the Administrative Board and Sunday School teacher at the Gainesville First United Methodist Church; <br /> <br /> and, WHEREAS, Eston Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr. served with honor, integrity and great distinction as a leader, counselor and ambassador for Common Cause Georgia as Vice Chairman in 2014;<br /> <br /> RESOLVED, that the Common Cause Georgia Board of Directors formally acknowledges<br /> and extends its proud appreciation to the family of Eston Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr. for his service to mankind, his Country, his profession and particularly to Common Cause Georgia;<br /> <br /> and, RESOLVED FURTHER, that the Common Cause Georgia Board of Directors hereby creates the "WYC ORR LEGAL ADVOCACY DEMOCRACY AWARD" to be given at our annual<br /> awards reception to a member of the Georgia Bar or a Georgia citizen who has<br /> demonstrated exceptional advocacy for bettering our democracy by use of the legal system in furtherance of ethical, honest, open, and fair government.<br /> <br /> This Resolution was passed at a duly called meeting of the Board of Directors of Common Cause Georgia and said Resolution is to be recorded in the Official Minute Book of Common Cause Georgia with a copy given to the family of Eston Wycliffe (Wyc) Orr, Sr.</i><br /> <br /> <br />
