GAINESVILLE - Riverside Military Academy has finalized plans for a memorial service for a cadet who was killed in a pedestrian accident in Duluth.

Cadet Mingyu Gao, who was from China, will be remembered Friday, March 7 at 11:30 a.m. in the Carlos and Sandra Cervantes Theatre for the Arts. Gao's family has requested that the service be a private event for the cadets and for family members.

Gao and another cadet were on leave this past Friday and were crossing Peachtree Industrial Blvd. at Rogers Bridge Rd. in Duluth just before 10 p.m. when they were struck by a vehicle.

Officials with the school said one cadet suffered a concussion and broken leg and is now back on campus. Gao remained at Gwinnett Medical Center on life support until his family arrived from China. Life support was turned off, and Gao was declared dead on Tuesday.

While Duluth police said a full incident report would not be available for several days, the school said neither the driver nor a following witness saw the boys before the accident. The driver also passed a field sobriety test.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss," school president Col. James Benson said. "He was a fine young man who just joined the Corps of Cadets in January."
