ROME, Ga. (AP) Federal prosecutors say a northwest Georgia woman has pleaded guilty to stealing her granddaughter's Social Security benefits.

Authorities said Thursday that 68-year-old Margie Sue Goad of Dalton relinquished custody of her granddaughter to the state and stole her Social Security benefits.

Prosecutors say Goad was appointed as the payee for her granddaughter's benefits but didn't tell the Social Security Administration that she relinquished custody of the girl in 2002. Prosecutors say the girl was being housed in foster and group homes while Goad spent her granddaughter's benefits on herself.

Prosecutors say Goad's sentencing is scheduled for July 31.
