OAKWOOD - With the official groundbreaking Friday morning for the Milton Martin Toyota dealership in Oakwood, city officials said they are looking forward to more growth in the area.

The Toyota dealership, which will be built on 12-acres overlooking I-985 near the Oakwood exit, will flank the east side of the interstate. Oakwood Mayor Scroggs said city officials have been carefully planning for growth in the south Hall town, making sure there is proper infrastructure to support incoming business.

"That's our real support and tax base is our business community," said Scroggs.

He predicted other businesses will follow the dealership to Oakwood.

"There [are] some other people already looking and talking," said Scroggs. "There will be other businesses here."

Adjacent to the 12-acre Milton Martin Toyota site is another six-acre parcel that will be used for retail development, according to company spokeswoman Emily Hayes.

Hayes said the Toyota dealership is making the move to Oakwood from the original store on Browns Bridge Road, which was built in 1970. Milton Martin, Sr. began selling cars in 1961.

Hayes said the new dealership should be open at some point in the summer of 2015.

The Toyota facility will be only the second dealership in Oakwood - Hayes Dodge has been a fixture on the east side of I-985 for decades.
