Posted 9:00AM on Saturday 6th September 2014 ( 10 years ago )
There was not just one but three incredible finishes for area teams on Friday night in Week 2 of the high school football season.

The hype proved justified in Buford, as the Wolves pulled off an incredible fourth quarter rally to edge McEachern 27-20 in a game between two of the top teams in the state. The contest ended, fittingly, with Buford's defense holding inside its own 10-yard line to seal the victory over the Class AAAAAA behemoth.

Meanwhile, in Homer, Banks County halted a 14-game losing skid with a second half fightback over Johnson, 28-24.

And, in Barrow County, Winder-Barrow nipped cross-town rival Apalachee 26-20, scoring with just over a minute to play to clinch their second straight defeat of the Wildcats.

And that was just three of the contests on display.

Elsewhere, Jefferson and West Hall rolled to big wins -- the Dragons pouncing on North Hall en route to a 48-8 victory -- the Spartans blanking Chestatee 31-0.

In Jefferson, White County used its punishing ground game to great effect in a 34-26 defeat of Jackson County, while Union County knocked off Lumpkin County 28-7 thanks to four touchdown passes. Commerce also rolled to 2-0, pulling away from Hebron Christian, 36-14.

Lanier also earned its first Region 8-AAAAA win, knocking off Clarke Central 35-20, while North Gwinnett held off Hillgrove 28-21 on the road.

Fannin County also got its first win for new head coach Jim Pavao in dominating fashion, 55-0 over Murray County.

Stephens County and Mill Creek so nearly completed their own comebacks but ultimately fell to Elbert County and Dacula, respectively. Meanwhile, North Forsyth dropped a close battle to Chattahoochee.

For stories on games from throughout northeast Georgia, visit our Friday Game Night page, which also includes video from three venues -- Buford, North Hall and West Hall -- as well as scores from around the state.

AREA FOOTBALL SCORES, Sept. 5

Banks County 28, Johnson 24

Buford 27, McEachern 20

Chattahoochee 20, North Forsyth 17

Commerce 36, Hebron Christian 14

Dacula 28, Mill Creek 21

Elbert County 35, Stephens County 33

Fannin County 55, Murray County 0

Gilmer 23, Dawson County 0

Jefferson 48, North Hall 8

Lanier 35, Clarke Central 20

Mt.
