Three area teams left in prep football rankings

Buford, Jefferson and North Gwinnett are the only area teams that remain in the rankings after the release of the latest Georgia Sports Writers Association Prep Football Poll on Tuesday.<br /> <br /> Gainesville, which was 10th in the last Class AAAAA top 10, dropped out after a bye week last Friday night. The Red Elephants (0-1) will begin Region 8-AAAAA play with a chance to rebound from a season-opening defeat on Friday when Winder-Barrow visits City Park in a game broadcast live on 1240 AM.<br /> <br /> Gainesville, and fellow 8-AAAAA squad Flowery Branch both received nine votes and are on the cusp of the top 10, while 8-AAAAA newcomer Lanier also received three votes.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, Buford remained No. 1 in Class AAAA following a thrilling 27-20 defeat of former Class AAAAAA No. 6 McEachern. The Wolves (3-0) have a bye this week before playing host to White County on Sept. 19.<br /> <br /> Jefferson also kept its place at No. 5 in Class AAA this week following a 48-8 win over North Hall. The Dragons (3-0) will play host to arch-rival Commerce (2-0) this week.<br /> <br /> And, in Class AAAAAA, North Gwinnett moved up two spots to No. 7 after a 28-21 defeat of Hillgrove.
