GAINESVILLE - If the weather cooperates this week, then there should be some major progress on the State Route 284 bridge at the Olympic Venue in north Hall County.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Monday morning that crews will begin setting bridge beams this week, placing five each day Monday through Thursday.

"Each bridge beam is custom made like a puzzle piece that only fits in one place. The beams will be driven up 1-985. Each beam is 136 feet long and six feet two inches tall," said Harold Mull, Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer.

"The plan is to set beams daily Monday through Thursday on three spans of the new bridge. We expect the beams setting to start about 10 a.m. each day and take most of the day. The northbound lane of SR 284 will be closed so traffic going to the beach or boat launch area will be directed by flaggers," said Mull.

This $8.7 million project includes construction of a new bridge on what is commonly known as Clarks Bridge road over the Chattahoochee River portion of Lake Lanier at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center. The project also includes a new pedestrian tunnel under SR 284.

The project completion date is December 31, 2015.
