Statements were made, along with a few key escapes on another big night of high school football action throughout northeast Georgia on Friday.

Perhaps the biggest finale came in Hoschton, where North Gwinnett fought off Mill Creek for a 51-41 win in a Region 7-AAAAAA showdown that saw the drama typical of a Bulldogs-Hawks showdown. The two teams racked up just over 1,100 yards -- including 369 yards passing and 4 TDs for North Gwinnett quarterback John Urzua.

Two other thrillers highlighted the night, as Lumpkin County edged out East Hall 38-35. The scoring difference came on a 42-yard field goal from Noah Cromer in the fourth quarter, as the Indians held on for their first Region 7-AAA win under new coach Ty Maxwell. But the biggest difference was in the ground game, as Lumpkin rushed for 472 yards in the game.

And in Region 8-AAAAA, Winder-Barrow saw their last-second comeback attempt turned aside after moving to the Salem 3-yard line with just over 30 seconds to play in a 31-24 loss to the Seminoles.

Also in 8-AAAAA, Gainesville forced seven turnovers in a 47-13 defeat of Heritage, Conyers, while Flowery Branch bounced back to its winning ways with a 17-7 defeat of Cedar Shoals, while Lanier also stayed undefeated with a 28-14 defeat of Loganville.

In Region 8-AAA, Jefferson dominated crosstown rival Jackson County for a 34-7 victory.

In 7-AAA, West Hall battled its way to a 26-3 win over Dawson County and a 1-0 start to league play. Also in 7-AAA, Franklin County pulled out a 22-21 victory over Banks County.

Union County rolled to a 5-0 record and 1-0 in Region 8-AA courtesy a 52-19 domination of Social Circle.

Commerce also kept their record spotless in region play, taking out Athens Christian 10-7 on the road, while Johnson earned its first win in a 16-7 defeat of Riverside Military.
