CUMMING - A councilman in the city of Cumming should find out Tuesday if impeachment proceedings against him will move forward.

Rupert Sexton, who has been a member of the city council since 1971, is accused of releasing a document that lists the names of city employees who receive city health benefits. He has denied doing so.

The fuss over health benefits arose late last year when it came to light that the city was paying health insurance premiums for the girlfriend of Cumming Mayor Ford Gravitt. She is not a full-time employee of the city.

CBS46-TV in Atlanta reported that Sexton at a meeting last fall requested life-time health benefits for spouses of elected city officials. When the idea was shot down, Sexton is reported to have made a threat to "do what he had to do." Shortly afterward, the benefits list appeared on social media, according to the TV station.

In December, City Council appointed a special investigative panel to review the release of the list.

That panel is to meet in special session with the Cumming City Council at 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to the City of Cumming web site. (See link below.)
