DAWSONVILLE — Highway 53 has re-opened after a collision between a Dawson County fire truck and a passenger vehicle, west of War Hill Park, according to a spokeswoman for the Georgia State Patrol's Cumming Post.

The road was re-opened at 3:45 p.m. Friday.

Georgia State Trooper Chris Jones said the fire truck was responding to a call, and a vehicle attempted to pass another vehicle that was moving out of the way for the fire truck.

"The Dawson County fire truck was headed east on Highway 53, had lights and sirens on, was going to a priority one call," said Jones. "The at fault vehicle, driven by the minor, was headed west on Highway 53."

"There was a vehicle in front of the at fault vehicle that was starting to pull over, and when it started to pull over, the vehicle behind it went to pass it and got in to the eastbound lane as she was trying to pass it, and hit the fire truck head on."  Jones said the other vehicle did not make contact with the head-on collision, but flying debris damaged the car.

The Georgia Department of Transportation also had crews on the scene assisting with clean-up.

Trooper Jones said the minor driver was very seriously injured, and charges are pending. Three others were injured in the crashes. Dawson County Fire Chief Lanier Swafford confirmed his firefighters had been treated on scene and were released.
