RHINE, Ga. (AP) Dodge County authorities say they are not going to charge the mother of a toddler who shot herself in the leg with a loaded gun that was left on a bed.
Sheriff Lynn Sheffield tells WMAZ-TV that the injured 3-year-old girl is the child of Dodge County deputy Dorian Johnson. He says the loaded gun was Johnson's personal firearm.
Sheffield says the girl suffered the non-life-threatening injury Monday afternoon in Rhine. He says the mother, Lakeasha Smith, told investigators that she moved the 9-mm handgun from a chest of drawers and placed in on the bed in order to move a television to the bedroom. The toddler crawled onto the bed and accidentally fired the gun into her right leg.
Sheffield says no charges will be filed because the shooting appears to be an accident.
